Meta's Idaho Data Centre Runs on 200,000 Gallons That Stay Put

The $1.2 billion Kuna facility uses closed-loop cooling: one fill, circulating for seven to ten years, in a state where water rights are the binding constraint on industrial siting.

Meta has brought its Kuna, Idaho data centre online after a four-year, $1.2 billion build. The site covers 750,000 square feet, with the largest server building at 350,000 square feet. Construction peaked at 1,600 workers; about 100 permanent roles remain, of which 75 were filled at opening. Three solar projects backing 645 megawatts offset consumption.

The number worth dwelling on is 200,000 gallons — the entire water volume in the cooling system, circulating in sealed pipes and expected to last seven to ten years before replacement. Director of global economic development Brad Davis put it as filling the system once and it being good for seven to ten years; critical operations manager Scott Stillings said the water used today will be used tomorrow and for the next ten years.

Closed-loop cooling is a straightforward engineering trade and worth understanding as one. Evaporative cooling is thermodynamically efficient — the latent heat of vaporisation does a great deal of work — but it consumes water continuously, at rates that become politically and legally significant in arid regions. A closed loop rejects heat through dry coolers or chillers instead, which uses more electricity for the same heat rejection but consumes essentially no water after the initial fill. In Idaho, where water rights are the binding constraint on industrial siting and where new large loads attract scrutiny precisely on that axis, spending electricity to avoid consuming water is the trade that gets a project permitted.

That trade is becoming general. The industry's water consumption has moved from a footnote to a leading local objection, and the response has been a shift toward closed-loop and liquid-to-liquid designs that keep water inside the building. It is also why heat rejection equipment has become an acquisition target — the same week SLB agreed to buy Kelvion, a heat exchanger manufacturer whose data centre revenue already ran above a billion dollars.

For industrial readers outside the data centre world, the transferable point is the framing. Meta is not claiming to use less water than it otherwise would; it is claiming the water does not leave. That distinction — consumption versus circulation — is the one that matters in any permitting conversation about industrial water, and it is worth getting right in your own environmental reporting before somebody else does it for you.
